Queen Lili‘uokalani Re-Dedication Program

This piece was created for the Queen Lili'uokalani Re-Dedication Ceremony — a program and e-vite honoring Hawaiʻi's beloved last monarch. The silhouette of Queen Lili'uokalani has been used in design before, but this was my own interpretation of it. I drew inspiration from the artist Olly Moss, whose work with silhouettes of iconic figures showed me how much weight a simple profile can carry when treated with the right care and intention.

The design direction aimed for something that felt timeless — classic in its reverence for the subject, but with a modern sensibility that kept it from feeling like a museum artifact. Typography was the key to striking that balance. Finding a serif that read as contemporary while still carrying the gravity of a historical ceremony took time, but it became the anchor for everything else in the piece.

The result is something I'm proud of — a design that honors a significant figure in Hawaiian history with the dignity she deserves, while still feeling considered and current. Created during my time at Design Asylum, Inc., with design and artwork by wow studio.
